This document is intended to be used as both instructions and as a checklist for raising the cyclotron lid via the operation of the elevating system.
The author assumes that anyone using these instructions has a basic knowledge
of the location and operation of the devices mentioned herein and
is familiar with the methods required to perform

READY : Push and hold the "RAISE" button for five seconds......
more When the elevating system is running, make continual checks of all "moving parts". Walk around and listen to for any unusual noises from the jacks and other sources.
Check the ISIS level and ontop the lid. Check that come... the braided S.S. cooling and air lines are not interfering with anything. One person must stay near the pendant so as
to be able to stop the system as quickly as possible if it is deemed necessary. When the magnet has been raised
about four inches, check for the main tank seal sticking to the lid.
If sticking, be prepared to "knock it down" with the pole that is stored in the south west corner of the vault.
When the magnet has been raised about twelve inches, check for the
main tank seal "hanging up" on the resonators. This will not happen if the seal stayed in the grove,
but be prepared to "knock it down" with the pole.
1.2 AFTER THE LID IS UP :
[ ] Record the final data on the checklist [ ] Coil up and replace the pendant [ ] Retract the HE 3 probe and disconnect motor cable at probe (see 2.8) [ ] Note in the log book if and where the main tank vacuum seals have come out [ ] Replace the previously removed latching port cover but do not clamp ! [ ] Lower the Inflector assembly (see 2.4) [ ] Set the elevating system control switches to : OFF/ON , NORMAL/TEST , HAND/AUTO , LOCAL/REMOTE [ ] Remove the elevating system control centre keys and lock the cabinet door [ ] Record the operation in the main log book noting any anomalies [ ] Remove all interlock defeats installed for this operation [ ] Attach the motor current graph to the completed checklist
2. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
2.1 RESONATORS : LATCHING / UNLATCHING
LATCH : by turing the tool Counter Clock Wise
UNLATCH : by turing the tool Clock Wise
2.3 MOTOR CURRENT DATA ACQUISITION PROGRAM : VAX SYSTEM
NOTE : For further information and a complete description of the program see the " VAX " section
of the " ROUTINE OPERATIONS AND PROCEDURES " book.
2.4 INFLECTOR : RAISING / LOWERING
The Inflector/Deflector assembly is raised and lowered by a motor and gear mechanism located in the
vault basement on the South side of the cyclotron centre support structure.
The motor is controlled via
an 0446/1 controller at the East side of the structure. The controller has a local/remote switch, four
buttons with associated large lamps and two small lamps.
The definitions are :

2.5 Al-ALCW WATER SYSTEM SHUTDOWN
Check if the Main Magnet booster pump (ME-7) is off. If yes go to 3, otherwise 1.
2.6 MAIN MAGNET "OFF FOR 30 MINUTES" INTERLOCK
Main Magnet Power Supply control power Must Be ON to provide this signal.
The "Main Magnet off for 30 minutes" signal is provided by a switch located in the Main Magnet control
and metering cabinet. This air operated switch labelled "AGASTAT timing relay"
is mounted inside the
cabinet high up and to the rear on the left (west) wall beneath the sign "SAFETY MAGNET
INTERFACE". If the control power is left on for thirty minutes after the
main magnet is turned off, then this relay will "time out" and correctly provide the "...off 30 min." signal. However if the control power
is not left on the relay will not time out and the signal
will not be supplied. In this case turn the control power on, force the relay to "time out" by rotating the setpoint dial (engraved black dial on top) to
ZERO. Once this is done, the dial can
and must be to set back to 30 minutes.

2.9 SPILL MONITOR HIGH VOLTAGE
The high voltage for the cyclotron tank spill monitors must be switched off for both equipment and
personnel safety. The power supplies are a double width "J&P" NIM module type
NM121D. It is located in second NIM bin from the top of rack 4A on S.A. level 264. The module is labelled HIGH VOLTAGE
SUPPLY. There are two toggle switches labelled
ON and OFF, just above the two output cables.
These ON/OFF switches are correctly labelled, but their action is the reverse of normal. UP is OFF , DOWN
is ON ! Ensure that the switches are in the correct position for the desired state.

3. OVERVIEW
The Triumf cyclotron elevating system is used to raise the top half of the cyclotron four feet to allow access to the interior of the cyclotron tank.
The elevating system consists of twenty four screw jacks arranged in twelve pairs. Each jack screw is driven by
a worm gear with a gear ratio of _____ to one.
Each screw jack worm gear is driven by another worm gearset (Highfield) with a sixty to one gear ratio. Each pair of Highfield
gearsets is driven by one double ended
twenty horsepower electric motor. Each motor is equipped with an electrically operated amarture brake.
One of each pair of screw jacks is connected to a mechanical counter and phase translator. The mechanical counter
reads out the height of the jack in inches.
The phase translator sends a signal to the elevating control system where
it is compared with a master servo reference signal. The control system determines if the motor
should be ON or OFF during the lifting/lowering cycle depending on the relative position of the jack and reference. The reference
moves at a rate of 0.025"/sec while the
jacks move at 0.030"/sec. Therefore the motors are constantly being cycled on and off to keep the entire system in alignment.
The range from fully down to full up is about four feet, 0.165" - 47.506" as indicated by the master synchro counter. Full travel takes about 27 minutes (29 Mar down=26.5').

4. TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
4.1 BYPASSING C.S.S. INTERLOCKS
This procedure should only be carried out by the Shift Supervisor or designate and only when one hundred percent confident that the interlock condition is satisfied, but is not indicating correctly.
On level 264 locate the C.S.S. Elevating System Interface box which is mounted in the top of the east side of the safety rack that is located near the west staircase.
Internally there are three rows of components. From the east side rows one and two are the signal relays. Row three
is two 24 terminal fast-on strips for the relay coil connections.
The east strip is the individual coil connections andv vthe west strip is the commom coils buss.
Use this guide to determine which terminals are associated with which interlocks. The terminals are numbered from
south to north. To bypass an interlock, use a jumper wire to connect the appropriate
terminal on the east strip to
any terminal of the west strip.
If the interlocks are all satisfied then pushing the "Enable P.B." will cause the enabled LED to light and the status on the C.S.S. display page will change from "DISABLED" (red) to "ENABLED" (green).

4.2 VACUUM TANK AT ATMOSPHERE SWITCH
As it is difficult to determine the difference between at atmosphere and under just a few mm of vacuum this switch
does not operate 100% reliably and may have to be attended to in order
to get it to read at atmosphere correctly.
This switch is located in lower valley 6, on port IB, near the middle of the valley, between LQ2 and LQ3 resonator
#6 tip drives. The switch is in a 4" diameter 1.5" thick grey enclosure labelled
"Edwards Vacuum Switch VSK.1.B."
on the bottom side. A 1/4" diameter 4" long tube extends out of the top of the enclosure up to the port flange. A
gentle tap on the enclosure is often enough
to result in this switch indicating correctly. Do not bypass this switch
unless a latching port cover has already been removed, thus ensuring that the tank is at atmosphere.
